Bornea clashes with Mexican

World No. 1 super-flyweight contender Jade Bornea takes another step towards a shot at the big time when he collides with Mexican Ivan Meneses today in the world-famous resort town of Cabo San Lucas.

If victorious, Bornea, unbeaten in 17 fights with 11 knockouts, will be lined up to battle the winner of the 8 October showdown between reigning International Boxing Federation 115-lb king Fernando Martinez of Argentina and erstwhile titleholder Jerwin Ancajas.

But first things first.

Bornea has to hurdle past the veteran Meneses, who will be entering the fight aiming to ruin the Filipino puncher’s grand plans.

Throughout his 18-year-old pro career, Meneses has slugged with several big names, including Nicaraguan Roman Gonzalez.

Meneses, 32, came in at 118 lbs during the official weigh-in yesterday.

Bornea, 27, likewise tipped the same as the training tandem of Ernel Fontanilla and Ting Ariosa is looking forward to a show of force.

A bronze medalist in the 2012 World Youth Championships, Bornea is a talent of Probellum, a fast-rising promotional outfit that also handles Nonito Donaire and a bevy of other marquee names.

To get ready for his second fight on Mexican soil, Bornea spent quality time with Fontanilla and Ariosa at Freddie Roach’s Wild Card Boxing Club in Hollywood.
