The Youth Leadership for Democracy (YouthLed) has recognized 10 of the best democracy projects of its fellows that aim to create innovative solutions on social issues.
Education
YouthTeach, by Queenie Tomaro of Iligan City, is a 20-day reading program for Grades 5 and 6 students with the use of comics with localized themes and content. It seeks to enhance their reading and comprehension skills.
Project ALAP by Fatima Malate of Davao City is an inclusive education system for the Ata Manobo tribe in Talaingod, Davao del Norte. It uses cultural awareness and identity preservation to highlight the Indigenous Knowledge, Skills, and Practices (IKSPs).
Economy, women and youth
KAMAKA, by Nekka Abueva of Misamis Oriental, is a project that advocates the welfare of the housewives of “padyak” drivers of Cagayan de Oro City.
LOVE Project: LOan to saVE by John Marlou Salido of Aklan is a livelihood program that aids the recovery of the people of Kalibo. It focuses on educating the locals on financial management and entrepreneurship.
The BAKA Program (Bayanihan sa Agrikultura para sa Kabatan-onan, Kaumahan, ug Katubigan) by Ezel Lambatan of Cagayan de Oro City provides knowledge about the agricultural sector and how can it serve as a way of income.
Sustainable KakaWASHan by Rodolfo Matucan from North Cotabato nvolves residents, and immigrants alongside dikes and water irrigation in Cuyapon, Sitio Lower Silangan, Cuyapon, Cotabato, and Kabacan. Its target is to create an accessible, safe drinking water source.
Safetalks by Samuel Madriaga from Laguna informs the youth of San Pablo City on sexual awareness and health-related topics including the prevention of teenage pregnancy.
Culture and nationalism
The Traveling Salakot by PJ Hernandez of Bulacan is a program that educates about nationalism and patriotism by promoting civic education and governance through community participation. It appeals to the youth with the use of arts and culture.
Project UWAY of JJ Ilagan of Cavite and Angela Encomienda of Camarines Sur establishes a community of indigenous learners that allow them to participate in modern society while remaining anchored in their traditions and beliefs.
Project Pamana by Richelle Verdeprado of Negros Occidental collaborates with Sowing Legacy Movement Inc. to teach good governance and citizenship to the youth of Negros Occidental.
The select projects are given grants to jumpstart its operations. The YouthLed awards are in partnership with Asia Foundation, US Agency for International Development, the Ateneo Schools government and Ayala Foundation Inc.
