French-Filipino friendlies cancelled

The much-awaited friendly duels between Asvel Lyon and some Filipino clubs in the France-Philippines Basketball Exhibition have to wait.

In an announcement, the French Embassy said with Gilas Pilipinas unavailable, it is calling off the scheduled friendly matches between Asvel Lyon and some Filipino clubs that were initially set from 28 August to 4 September.

Asvel Lyon, the French powerhouse owned by former National Basketball Association star Tony Parker, is set to face the Bay Area Dragons on 31 August, NLEX on 2 September and Blackwater on 4 September.

Gilas were initially set to join but had to beg off as they are still in the thick of their campaign in the fourth window of the FIBA World Cup Asian Qualifiers.

“The friendly game between French team LDLC Asvel and Philippine men’s basketball team Gilas has been postponed to a later date as Gilas Pilipinas could not be available on the initially scheduled date,” the French said, adding that they are still looking to forge a stronger basketball relationship with the Filipinos.

“In order to schedule a new date in the very tight schedule of both teams, the LDLC Asvel management plans to visit Manila soon to further establish partnerships and promote the exchange of knowledge and skills.”

“The establishment of a basketball academy in the Philippines, inspired by Tony Parker Adequate Academy, will also be at the heart of future exchanges.”

Philippine Basketball Association commissioner Willie Marcial confirmed the development, saying that Blackwater team owner Dioceldo Sy is expected to issue a statement.
