World Amateur: Pinays kick off bid

The Philippines has been paired with Scotland and Austria at the start of the 29th Women’s World Amateur Team Championship at the Le Golf National and Golf de Saint-Nom-La-Bretèche in Paris, France Thursday.

The Filipinas will start at the back nine of the Golf de Saint-Nom-La-Bretèche.

Mikhaela Fortuna, who arrived over the weekend from California, will kick off the country’s campaign at 8:33 a.m. in the company of Isabella Holpfer and Lorna McClymount.

Fortuna took the place of Rianne Mikhaela Malixi who was unable to process her French visa on time due to her commitments in the United States.

Mafy Singson, who came from Manila with coach Miko Alejandro, will play with Johanna Ebner and Chloe Goadby at 8:44 a.m.

Singson competed in a series of junior events in the US the past two months including the Junior World in San Diego after winning a leg of the local Ladies Professional Golf Tour at Splendido.

Lois Kaye Go tees off at 8:55 a.m. alongside Anna Neumayer and Hannah Darling.

Go is coming off a failed attempt to advance in the Ladies Professional Golf Association Tour Q-School in California.

Singson and Go were members of the team that won gold in the last Southeast Asian Games in Vietnam.

“We’re pretty much confident that we have a solid team here and everyone’s looking forward to making a good account of themselves playing against the world’s best this week,” said National Golf Association of the Philippines secretary-general Bones Floro.

World No. 1 Rose Zhang of Stanford University will be leading the United States title-retention bid in the tournament that was canceled in 2020.
