Q. Ave. mishap kills back rider

A motorcycle back rider was killed while the driver was seriously injured when they were hit by a speeding Toyota Hi-Ace commuter van in Quezon City, Saturday morning.

The deceased was identified by the police as Carlo John Castaneda, while the injured rider was tagged as Reynold Quirit Tabbada, 35. Both are residents of Tumana, Marikina.

The van’s driver, Bien Ancit Villafuerte, 46, of Ligas II Bacoor, Cavite, surrendered to the authorities.

Based on the report of the Quezon City Police District Traffic Sector 6, the accident happened around 6 a.m. at the northbound lane of the Quezon Avenue fly-over in Barangay New Hope.

According to P/SSg. Romeo Birog Jr., the motorcycle and van were traveling from Kamuning going to North Avenue when the collision happened. The two men were thrown off their motorcycle.

Castaneda died on the spot while Tabbada was rushed to the Quezon City General Hospital.

“According to the witness, the motorcycle was hit by the van in the back, and it lost control, with the back rider rolling over and bumping his head hard,” Birog said.

Villafuerte was detained to face charges of reckless imprudence resulting in homicide and serious physical injury.
