Former Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev has died after a long illness, according to Russian state news agencies.
He was 91.
“Mikhail Sergeevich Gorbachev died this evening after a severe and prolonged illness,” Russian news agency RIA Novosti reported on 30 August, quoting the Central Clinical Hospital, in Moscow.
Gorbachev was known for undertaking “reforms that led to the break-up of his own country, and to the demise of communism across central and eastern Europe.”
