Student stabs teacher to death

TACLOBAN CITY — Authorities are preparing a murder case against a 19-year-old student who stabbed dead a senior high school teacher in a heated altercation during a drinking session before dawn on Monday in Basey, Samar.

Basey Police acting chief Police Master Sargent Jerry Vargas said that based on the initial investigation, there was an intent to kill the teacher thus it is filing a murder charge before the Prosecutor’s Office.

The victim — identified as George Barsana Lauron, a Science senior high school teacher at Basey National High School — was stabbed inside his boarding house at around 5:30 a.m., according to reports.

He was immediately rushed to the Basey District Hospital but was declared dead on arrival by the attending physician.

The suspect, Kurt Apolinar Lancanan, a senior high school student of the same school, immediately surrendered to the police after the incident.

Investigations showed that Lauron invited Lancanan and his friend to a drinking session at around 2 a.m. in the teacher’s boarding house in Barangay Sulod of Basey town, where after a few shots, the victim and the suspect engaged in a heated argument.

The student then stabbed the teacher in the abdomen with a kitchen knife.

The drinking companion was not able to immediately stop the fight and fled the house after the incident.

Investigators are still trying to determine the real motive of the killing.

The Department of Education, meantime, has yet to issue a statement on the incident.
