Filipinas, Costa Ricans draw match

Katrina Guillou struck in the 93rd minute to help the Philippine national women’s football squad force a 1-1 draw with world No. 37 Costa Rica in their friendly game Friday at the Alejandro Morera Soto Stadium in Alajuela, Costa Rica.

A mainstay of Pitea IF at Damallsvenskan in Sweden, Guillou kicked the ball into the net after Las Ticas goalkeeper Priscilla Tapia could not get a grip of the ball.

Costa Rica broke the ice courtesy of Priscilla Chinchilla in the 57th minute.

This was the first time both sides played against each other in an international setting as they are getting ready for their stints in the FIFA Women’s World Cup next year.

Guillou, a Filipino-French player, knew the Philippines would level the count owing to the pressure Costa Rica was getting.

“We knew it was just a matter of time, and we just kept pressing, and they were getting a little tired,” Guillou said.

“We were all there for that one last push, and we were able to put it away.”

“Playing against Costa Rica, we knew their playing style was different than anything we had before so we adjusted.”

Head coach Alen Stajcic was delighted but was unhappy with the team’s passing.
