TD Maymay maintains strength prior to landfall

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration reported that tropical depression ‘Maymay’ maintains its strength prior to its landfall.

In its 5:00 PM weather bulletin on Tuesday, 11 October, PAGASA said that the tropical depression is expected to make landfall in Aurora province on Wednesday evening or early Thursday morning.

The weather bureau added that “Maymay” may be downgraded to a low-pressure area while traversing over the landmass due to the frictional effects.

It was last tracked 265 kilometers east of Casiguran, Aurora, and remains almost stationary over the Philippine Sea.

It packs a maximum sustained winds of 45 kilometers per hour near the center with a gustiness of up to 55 kph.

PAGASA said tropical cyclone wind signal 1 is hoisted over the Isabela, Quirino, Nueva Vizcaya, Aurora, Nueva Ecija, and the extreme northern portion of Quezon province particularly in General Nakar, Infanta including Pollilo Islands.

Moderate to heavy rains will prevail over the Cagayan, the northern portion of Isabela, Batanes, and Apayao until Wednesday. While light to moderate, and at times heavy rains will be experienced in Aurora, Abra, Kalinga, Mountain Province, Ilocos Norte, and the rest of Isabela.

PAGASA noted strong winds to near gale strength may be experienced within any of the areas where TCWS 1 is currently in effect.

Occasional gusts reaching strong to gale-force strength associated with the enhanced northeasterly surface wind flow and its convergence with the tropical depression circulation may also be experienced in the next 24 hours.

PAGASA said the marine gale warning remains in effect over the seaboards of Northern Luzon and the eastern seaboards of Central and Southern Luzon under the influence of ‘Maymay.’

The tropical depression is forecast to move slowly westward before it gradually accelerates westward towards Central Luzon.
