Bong Go supports Marcos’ call for convenient specialty hospital services

In support of the Marcos administration’s priority legislative measure to establish more specialty hospitals outside Metro Manila, the Senate Committee on Health and Demography held a public hearing on 11 October led by its Chair Senator Bong Go.

Go said he supports the establishment of more medical specialty centers nationwide, lamenting that Filipinos from various provinces still have to travel to the National Capital Region just to access their services.

Existing specialty hospitals include the Philippine Heart Center, Lung Center of the Philippines, Philippine Children’s Medical Center, and the National Kidney and Transplant Institute.

The senator lamented that all specialty hospitals are situated in Metro Manila, which make them inaccessible to Filipinos in other parts of the country.

Dagdag pa sa iisipin nila ang transportation at accommodation costs,” he said.

During the hearing, the DOH suggested that it is more cost-efficient to establish specialty centers in select DOH hospitals instead of establishing new hospitals. The five specialty hospitals present during the hearing agreed with this approach.

He urged authorities to study the viability of whether it would be best to establish new specialty hospitals in various regions or simply enhancing existing public hospitals to be able to have specialty hubs similar to what SPMC has.

Go then said he is pleased that President Ferdinand Marcos. Jr. is prioritizing efforts to improve Filipinos’ access to specialty hospitals, saying, “He announced in his first State of the Nation Address that this administration intends to bring these kinds of centers closer to the people.”

With the possible establishment of other specialty hospitals outside Metro Manila, Go said that Filipinos will have improved access to their services wherever they are in the country.
