PNP fetes Bandiala

The Philippine National Police (PNP) will posthumously confer on Ateneo de Manila University security guard Jeneven Bandiala the Medalya ng Katangitanging Asal for the heroism he showed in trying to stop the murder of ex-Lamitan mayor Rosita Furigay last 24 July.

Bandiala’s act cost him his life in an incedent that also saw Furigay and her close aide being shot dead by Chao Tiao Yumol, a doctor whose clinic in Lamitan was closed down by the slain ex-mayor for lacking a permit to operate.

“Bandiala deserves this honor for the heroism he showed in safeguarding students and other individuals on campus and for supporting the PNP in bringing justice by attempting to stop the gunman from escaping,” Maj. Valeriano de Leon said Monday.

“His bravery will be remembered forever and will serve as an inspiration to his fellow security guards. He illustrated what bravery and dedication to one’s vocation truly entail,” De Leon added.

The PNP will also provide the Bandiala family with other assistance, including bringing his remains to Lopez Jaena, Misamis Occidental.

Yumol’s father, a retired policeman, was shot dead in front of his house also in Lamitan last week, with the Furigay family denying having anything to do with the killing.

Roderick Furigay took over as mayor from his late wife this year after the later finished three consecutive terms that started in 2013. Roderick was also Lamitan mayor from 2004 to 2013.
