‘Asia’s Fastest Woman’, 58

Filipino athletics legend Lydia de Vega-Mercado has passed away due to Stage four beast cancer.

Her daughter, Steph Mercado de Koenigswarter, confirmed the development in a social media post late Wednesday that the former Sprint Queen of Asia has passed away at the Makati Medical Center.

“On behalf of our family, it is with absolute grief that I announce the death of my mother, Lydia De Vega this evening, August 10, 2022, at the Makati Medical Center,” de Koenigswarter said.

“She fought the very good fight and is now at peace.”

In international competitions, De Vega-Mercado won 15 gold medals, six silver medals and three bronze medals.

She also participated in the 1984 and 1988 Olympics during her stint in the national team.

Details of her wake have yet to be announced.
