Patience, hard work: How a seaman became a singer

Musical artists who make enough money usually go into business.

But for Pitz Beriña, it was the other way around. His dream to become a singer had to wait since he needed to finish school first and get a job to help support his siblings.

For 20 years he worked in the maritime industry, rising from the ranks as a seafarer to full-fledged captain, and then striking out as an entrepreneur in the petroleum industry, as well as in manpower recruitment and training.

Now the Cebu native is pursuing a childhood passion as a professional singer and recording artist.

Pitz tapped Vehnee Saturno to write songs and produce his self-titled album. Of the 13 tracks, six are Saturno originals — including “Kita ay Mahal,” “Ika’y Mahal Pa Rin,” “Kubli Mo Ako,” “Kulang Ako,” and the inspirational ballad “May Isang Umaga.”

His cover of the Rodel Naval hit, “Muli,” also written by Saturno, is enjoying airplay even without a music video.

Pitz — short for Peter, who’s also dubbed the Singing Captain — is busy promoting his album via radio guesting, online shows and mall shows.

Even as he has achieved his ultimate goal, Pitz said he wants to share his blessings by putting up a business that can help the needy, especially the homeless.

He also wants to form his own media production outfit and talent agency to discover new singers, dancers and actors.

A grand vision is for his songs to be used in the soundtrack of TV series and movies, including indie productions and those shown on digital platforms.

Each day is an inspiration for him to help others. He believes everybody can realize their dreams — regardless of race, age and stature.

For Pitz’s sake, we wish him all the best!
