Man loses leg to suicide attempt

A man lost his right leg after he jumped from the platform of the Light Rail Transit Line 1 in an apparent suicide attempt before dawn on Wednesday in Caloocan City.

Caloocan police chief P/Col. Samuel Mina Jr. identified the victim as Georick John Labrador San Juan, 32, of Santa Maria, Bulacan.

San Juan jumped onto the northbound rail track at the Monumento LRT station before an incoming train, which was bound for the Balintawak Station, at 4:45 a.m.

“Based on what other passengers saw, it seemed like the person was waiting for the train to come and then jumped,” Edmund Pulong of the LRT Security Office said.

As a result, the victim’s right leg was severed when he was sideswiped by the train.

Caloocan City Police homicide investigator PSSg. Julius Mabasa said responding Caloocan City Rescue Team immediately rushed the victim to the Jose Reyes Memorial and Medical Center, but was later transferred to Philippine General Hospital where he is currently confined for medical treatment.

The LRT 1 train operation was temporarily suspended from R. Papa Station to Balintawak Station and restored at around 6:20 a.m.
