Customs intercepts contraband sugar

The Bureau of Customs (BOC)-Port of Subic in the province of Zambales intercepted the MV Bangpakaew that came from Thailand on Thursday, after they received information that it contained contraband bags of sugar.

According to the BOC, the said ship is suspected of carrying approximately 140,000 bags or 7,000MT of sugar classified as Reserved Sugar Bottlers’ Grade by the Sugar Regulatory Administration, according to Sugar Order No. 3, 2021-2022 series.

The Customs Intelligence and Investigation Services has sent investigators to the Port of Subic to find out the facts about the said shipment.

The BOC is considering filing a case with the Action Team against Smugglers, depending on the outcome of the investigation.

Meanwhile, the Sugar Regulatory Administration recently commended the Port of Subic for its successful capture of 11,384 bags of refined sugar worth P28.46 million in December 2021.
