‘Stampede’ victims get needed aid

ZAMBOANGA CITY — Following the pandemonium which ensued on 20 August during the distribution of the government’s educational assistance, the Department of Social Welfare and Development in Zamboanga Peninsula released Tuesday the educational assistance of the stampede victims here.

DSWD-9 information officer Ivan Eric Salvador disclosed that 27 of the 29 victims of the incident have received their respective educational assistance from the agency, adding that the beneficiaries comprised of elementary, high school, senior high and college students.

They received an amount ranging from P1,000 to P4,000.

“The medical team of our office also conducted follow-up checkups on the victims of the stampede,” Salvador said.

The victims were injured at the entrance of a local public school when a huge number of people gathered to avail of the government’s educational assistance.

The stampede happened as people rushed in when security personnel opened the gate of the Zamboanga City High School Main Campus that houses the Agan Coliseum in Barangay Tetuan, the venue of the educational aid payout.
