Avoid street foods, says doctor

Parents have been advised to discourage their children from buying street foods due to the danger that these pose.

Dr. Gloria de Aban, a family medicine specialist, said children can develop diarrhea after consuming foods that have been cooked for several hours. She said parasites quickly develop from spoiled foods.

If it cannot be avoided, De Aban suggested that the food be reheated or recooked at home.

De Aban was a guest on Sunday at the “Balitaan sa Tinapayan” forum where she reminded the public about the threat of diseases during the rainy season.

She cautioned Manila residents against wading through floods, noting that there’s a huge population of rats living underground.

Urine from rats can enter open wounds and lead to leptospirosis, a rare bacterial infection.
