Ex-kagawad, pal yield shabu, gun

A former barangay kagawad and his neighbor landed in jail after they allegedly yielded shabu or crystal meth and a pistol during a buy-bust operation in Sta. Mesa, Manila over the weekend.

The police on Sunday identified the suspects as Ryan Gonzales, formerly a village official of Barangay 699, Zone 76; and Rodolfo Paras, 61.

A report to P/Lt. Col. Dionelle Brannon, commander of Manila Police District’s Police Station 8, said 17 grams of shabu worth P115,600 were seized from the suspects.

Gonzales and Paras will be charged with drug pushing before the Manila City Prosecutor’s Office while Gonzales will also face a charge for illegal possession of firearms for the unlicensed Taurus 9mm pistol found in his possession.

Meanwhile, passers in the 2022 Shari’ah Bar examination will take their oath tomorrow, 23 August, at the Supreme Court’s session hall in Manila.

The SC required the passers to present a negative Covid-19 antigen test result by a Department of Health-accredited laboratory. The test should have been taken within 24 hours prior to the date of the oathtaking, it added.

No guests shall be allowed during the event, the High Court said in a notice. A total 156 out of 532 examinees passed the exam held on 20 and 22 March 2022 at the University of the Philippines in Diliman, Quezon City.

The passing rate for those who want to practice at the Muslim Shari’ah courts was 29.66 percent.
