Cop’s arrest spurs PDEG probe

Are there more police officers involved in the drug trade? Are the so-called “ninja cops” who moonlighted recycling drugs back on the streets?

Philippine National Police chief Gen. Rodolfo Azurin Jr. on Monday revealed that the police organization’s drug enforcement group is being investigated after a cop belonging to the unit was arrested Saturday in Manila for possession of two kilos of shabu.

“I don’t know the magnitude or where this investigation is going or whoever it will bump,” Azurin told reporters at Camp Crame. “If we have to start removing people from PDEG, definitely we will do that.”

PDEG refers to the PNP Drug Enforcement Group, a member of which, P/Msg. Rodolfo Mayo, 48, was arrested in a follow-up operation to the seizure by the Bureau of Customs and the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency of P6.7 billion worth of shabu.

Mayo was linked to the drug trade by one Rey Atadero who was earlier nabbed in relation to the big drug haul by BoC and PDEA.

Azurin said Mayo has expressed willingness to tell all to unmask those behind the huge shipment of drugs intercepted at the Port of Manila.
